Taking Gingrich' advice
Posted by jbholston at 04:25 PM

A while back, Newt Gingrich suggested that progressives could best campaign against the current rightwing regimes by simply asking 'Had Enough?', followed by any of the infinitely long list of incompetent ideological maneouvers destroying America as we know it.

I think that's a brilliant idea, so I'm stealing it.

Had Enough?

AP - Republican Tom Kean Jr.'s campaign plans a "Swift Boat"-style film accusing his Democratic rival of involvement in a New Jersey mob-connected kickback scheme despite public records and statements disputing that claim.

And,

The Patriots Act;

Justice Clarence Thomas refers to Justice John Paul Stevens’ “unfamiliarity with the realities of warfare” in his dissenting opinion. ACSBlog notes: “Stevens served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. Thomas’s official bio, by contrast, contains no experience of military service.”

Activist (=right wing, of course) Judges
Posted by jbholston at 03:29 PM

... sanction "political chaos" this morning, according to Andrew Cohen in the Post;

In the end, the law of the land, as expressed today by a thin majority of the Court, is that a political party in power in a state may solidify its power in Congress by enacting intensely partisan redistricting at any time unless opponents of the power play can prove a burden on their "representative rights," whatever that means.

Gee, Bush packs the court with activists (as in, ignore precedent for purely political purposes) and they rule for Delay's gerrymandering, quelle surprise...

Owens back to his venal ways...
Posted by jbholston at 01:02 AM

The right wing running the country decided last fall that this year's pet group to hate would be immigrants.

The right wing fear-mongers by stirring up hate against some group each election cycle --- gays, Muslims, academics/Ward Churchill, judges, this time immigrants --- to roust their base in hopes of hanging on to power...

Colorado's Owens is reverting to his silly partisan self in calling a special session to try to force some anti-immigrant hate legislation.

The only effect of undocumented immigrants in Colorado these last few years has been to keep meatpacking alive as an industry in the state... and to build Tom 'Nuke Mecca!' Tancredo's basement.

What could Owens seek to address before he slides into sports broadcast obscurity? Off the top of my head...

--Colorado still leads the country in foreclosures
--Ca. 40% of the state's citizens are uninsured
--No state-level oil and gas tax revenues -- unlike our rich Wyoming cousins...

As NPR wisely observed a few days ago, the wingnuts controlling the country don't really want immigration reform (notice that they don't want to actually govern any issue effectively) ... because then they couldn't run by arguing that they have to be reelected to finally do something about immigration...

Substitute gay-bashing; flag-burning; activist judges; or any other wedge-issue-du-jour for immigrants in the above paragraph, and you have the pattern ... foment discord and foster hate but never ever do anything about the supposed problem, because then you couldn't run on fear and keep your cold dead grip on power...

But whom do they want you to hate in re their massive federal deficits in support of endless war?

Hang 9/11 widows, John Murtha, and the editor of the New York Times!
