I've said a bazillion times that...

..the Federal government should be in the research, but not the research and development business...

Auditors fault missile defense plans 6/1/2006 5:18:06 PM WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has spent about $91 billion since the mid-1980s to defend against enemy ballistic missiles, but it has no clear criteria for deciding to use the system and its operational costs remain unclear, the Government Accountability Office said on Thursday.

I've also said that Star Wars is as silly as TIA ..

I might agree that federal spending on renewable energy/fossil fuel alternatives is wise ... ... that subject is at least obviously strategic to America...

Update on 'hero'
Posted by jbholston at 05:06 PM

Update to this story of the American who helped rescue a dying climber on Everest...

... it appears that sort of self-sacrifice is now considered 'not done';

...(earlier this month) a British mountaineer desperate for oxygen had collapsed along a well-traveled route to the summit. Dozens of people walked right past him, unwilling to risk their own ascents.

Within hours, David Sharp, 34, was dead.

...Sharp's death also reflects something else: a changed ethic in what was, until a couple decades ago, a tiny community where only the most experienced climbers would be found that high on a mountain — and where a dying climber would be abandoned only when a rescue threatened other lives.

In Sharp's case, about 40 people are thought to have walked past him as he sat cross-legged in a shallow snow cave.
