Who Owns U.S. Treasurys?
THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF PLANS by South Korea's central bank to diversify its $200 billion in foreign exchange holdings sent the greenback to a seven-year low against the South Korean won. But the comments shouldn't have come as a surprise. A year ago, the central bank said it would lower the proportion of U.S. Treasurys in its reserve holdings. It also revived one of the dollar's looming concerns: Could additional global central banks start to reduce their adherence on the dollar as a reserve currency?
