Debate Round 2
Posted by jbholston at 11:35 PM

Kerry smushed him again.

Interesting snap poll results here.

General meme is that Bush was aggressive and arrogant -- and completely defensive throughout.

Kerry was once again much more presidential. More facts, more calm, more clarity.

Kos has a great post about the worrying Fox analysts...

Kerry was particularly Presidential about stem cells.

Bush was particularly Dred-ful on the judge question.

"I can't take what is an article of faith for me, and legislate it..." What a contrast...

Lots of new visitors these days. Howdy, all.

For my political blogging, please make sure to visit The Rocky Mountain Progressive Network.

But since you're here I'll reprise the excerpt from the Washington Post this morning, which is ... stark ... in the German and English sense;

Do you remember what President Bush was saying about why Hussein was a threat, in the run up to war?

He said Iraq had chemical and biological weapons and was reconstituting its nuclear weapons program. He said sanctions and weapons inspections were ineffective at curtailing these programs. He said Hussein might put weapons of mass destruction in terrorist hands.

Duelfer says that's all wrong.

Without a comment from the president or vice president yesterday, press secretary Scott McClellan was left to give the immediate White House reaction. He simply denied that the report said what it did.

Thomas Friedman agrees...

... sadly... and he's been a hawk on Iraq since the start...

We're in trouble in Iraq.

I don't know what is salvageable there anymore. I hope it is something decent and I am certain we have to try our best to bring about elections and rebuild the Iraqi Army to give every chance for decency to emerge there. But here is the cold, hard truth: This war has been hugely mismanaged by this administration, in the face of clear advice to the contrary at every stage, and as a result the range of decent outcomes in Iraq has been narrowed and the tools we have to bring even those about are more limited than ever.

What happened? The Bush team got its doctrines mixed up: it applied the Powell Doctrine to the campaign against John Kerry - "overwhelming force" without mercy, based on a strategy of shock and awe at the Republican convention, followed by a propaganda blitz that got its message across in every possible way, including through distortion. If only the Bush team had gone after the remnants of Saddam's army in the Sunni Triangle with the brutal efficiency it has gone after Senator Kerry in the Iowa-Ohio-Michigan triangle. If only the Bush team had spoken to Iraqis and Arabs with as clear a message as it did to the Republican base.

So what's the next President do?
Posted by jbholston at 12:24 AM

About Iraq?

Even if we increase troops both directly and with allies, and push Sammara-like operations throughout other regions under 'insurgent' control, and an election is held in January ... what next?

It's taken Russia 13 years to drift back away from democracy -- wealthy years, driven by the price of oil.

Germany is still struggling to reconcile its two halves -- income and political schisms remain large.

Certainly 'democratizing Iraq' will take at least a generation.

With whose troops?

I hate to prognosticate that ca. February the next President will be addressing the nation to announce a phased departure of our troops from that country... either because 'it was much worse than I'd hoped by the time I came into office', or 'mission accomplished' redux...

Kerry has the bigger problem of recovering America's collapsed international status.

Bush just doesn't have a clue, but can't sustain the troop commitments, either.

On a brighter note, I had the chance to hear Denver's Mayor tonight, and chat a bit with the first couple. He reminded me that in Canada even the Mayors of the smallest of burghs are known as 'His Worship'.

And he said that he has the best job on earth.

My sense is he's got a great shot at staying in it for the next eleven years.

Which might just be an excellent thing for all of us...
