"NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton (search), in his first public remarks since the election, said Friday that President Bush's re-election offered great opportunities for both the incumbent and the Democratic Party.
"The two are not necessarily in conflict," Clinton told the annual conference of the Urban Land Institute (search), a Washington-based think tank. Democrats "shouldn't be all that discouraged" by Bush's narrow victory over U.S. Sen. John Kerry (search), he continued.
It would be a mistake, Clinton warned, for Democrats to "sit around and whine" after Tuesday's results."
This seems to make a lot of sense. I would rather focus on what can be done than what can't. Dems need to unite for the common good of the majority of America, including all of those states that bled red. Until that happens, disenfranchised will soon become disintegrated. There is no room for quitters now. Positive, constructive action should be the mantra. 2006 is just around the corner.
Although I am troubled at the direction of our country in many ways, the best way to attract support and a reasonable consensus is through moderate yet strong positions that incorporate both views. Is it out of the question to try to work together with the right? I will fight for the most important ideals but not at the risk of becoming isolated and ultimately ineffective.
It is time to work together as an American majority rather than a majority that is strictly political.
