Nonetheless, this is an unsurprising outcome from one-party politics (the Republican party controlled the selection process since there were no non-Republican candidates -- and could have avoided this a year ago). Without the heavy ongoing scrutiny of a competitive, mediated marketplace, any too-dominant political party in this country tends to hubris and ultimately abuse of power.
